Quad Bootup.

In the year 2009 there are many more options between which operating systems (OS) you can use than there ever before. There is: OSX (Apple), Windows (Microsoft), Linux, and now Google is even throwing their hat into the OS arena by creating Google Chrome. So which OS is right for you and what makes each OS a unique and fun experience? This article will list each OS and a basic list of pros and cons that accompany each respective OS.

Windows

Most likely you’re reading this article on a Windows computer, why do I say this? Simple, because Windows XP/Vista are the most used OS’s on the market currently, ahead of OSX and Linux. Since Windows comprises more than 80% of computers in the world, this means that it has the most widely available support and software available. It also means that because of its wide spread use and more unsecure build, that it’s most prone to spyware and viruses. Windows is by far the greatest choice for gaming, as most games are developed natively for windows and windows systems being generally less expensive.

Mac OSX

If you’ve been paying attention to your TV lately it’s very likely that you’ve at least seen one Mac Vs PC commercial. Apple’s OS has been gaining strength over the years and for good reason too. Mac OSX is much more secure to Windows because it’s a UNIX based operating system. These means that there virtually no spyware and virus applications currently affected Mac OSX systems. OSX is also much friendly for the casual user, as it’s designed for less technically users and is generally seen as much more fun experience. A downside to OSX is that you must ‘legally’ buy a Mac machine to run it. You can’t buy an OSX computer from a third-party vender such as Dell. This means that Apple’s computers tend to much more expensive than Windows set-ups.

Linux

Linux? What’s a Linux? You might think that Linux is some new operating system just because you’ve never heard of it, but the first iteration of Linux was actually released in the 1970’s. Why hasn’t Linux caught on? Many of the pros of Linux can also be considered a con is the easiest way to explain its popularity. Linux is the most technical of the three main OS’s. Literally anything and everything in Linux can be changed to match your desired wants; you just have to figure out how to do it. It’s not for casual users; however, as many casual users have a hard time figuring out how to even install Linux on their system. Something great about Linux is that it’s highly compatible and runs on just about any hardware. It’s also even more secure than OSX, which is very impressive considering that safety is one of Apple’s strongest selling points.

Which OS is right for you? Well that question is impossible to answer without knowing what kind of user you are and what you’re looking for. Chances are, Windows is fine for most people that are reading this article. It’s never a bad idea to consider using Mac OSX or Linux, however.

Mac vs PC

Apple’s MacBooks are all the rage today and it’s hard to not see a Mac vs. PC commercial when you turn on your TV, but are Macs really worth it? While it’s true that Mac does have a lot of advantages over PC machines due to its OSX OS, that doesn’t meant that it’s necessarily a good thing to buy a Mac. This article will outline 5 reasons why you should not buy a Mac.

1. Expense-You can argue against this point all you want, but the truth is, Apple’s computers are expensive. When you have the option to easily build your own computer for buy a laptop from a provider such as Dell or HP for half the price of a similarly specified Mac, is it really worth it? A Mac with a 13’ screen on Apple’s website is running at $1200, compared to the $500 it’s running on Dell’s website. This should give you an indicator as to what you’re paying for, overpriced hardware.

2. Video Gaming-If you’re a computer gamer that’s constantly buying new releases the day they’re released then a Mac is definitely not for you. Not only are many PC games not supported by Mac OSX but having to dual boot up Windows every time you play a game can be a chore. The hardware upgrades you have to make to a make to it comparable to PC gaming is ludicrous in price as well.

3. You still need Windows-While it is possible to dual-boot Windows with a Mac machine why would you really go through the extra hassle to purchase another OS. Windows isn’t cheap, it can cost over $200 depending on the version you’re getting and if your business is still using a Windows only application this may be a cost that you’re not willing to afford.

4. Aesthetics Are Not Important-No matter how hard Apple markets their computers are the cool or the pretty thing to have, that isn’t going to make them any better than a Windows machine. Your first goal when looking for a new computer should be that it run all the applications you want it to efficiently, and how it looks externally is not going to be the judge of that.

Apple’s MacBooks may be the cool thing to have, but that doesn’t means that they’re any better than just buying a PC. The only real advantages you get by buying a Mac are those presented with the OSX operating system, and that has nothing to do with the external computer.

Computer parts...

So you’ve had your old computer for years and you finally got a new one, but what happens to the old computer now? Don’t toss that old computer out yet, there are many ways you can salvage your old computer that you may have not even thought of! This article will list 5 ways that you can reuse your old computer.

1. Recycle- Perhaps the best thing you can do with your old computer is to recycle it. Many computer parts such as the hard drive are completely reusable saving you money when you decide to make the purchase towards a new computer. You may even be able to find a use with some of the other parts such as a case that have nothing to do with a computer. Plain recycling is also a choice, and may computer manufacturers such as Dell and Gateway do accept old computers for recycling.

2. Donate/Hand down- If you’re feeling generous, you can always donate your computer to a charity. Make sure you investigate the company you are donating to, you want to make sure they’re a non-profit refurbishing company and that they give the donated computers to schools or other worthy causes. Handing down your computer to relatives and friends is also a great way to get your computer off your hands.

3. Return- HP offers a return program where you can return your old PC for a discounted price off of a new one. While this may not seem to be the best value for your money, it’s a guarantee and it helps save you money towards a future purchase. If your computer is very aged, be prepared for a mediocre amount of money, however.

4. Upgrade- If your computer is only a few years old, why would you completely replace it? Many computer parts can easily be popped in and out and be upgraded. This allows you to increase the productivity of your computer while avoiding the cost of a brand new computer. Common parts that are upgraded are video cards, RAM, and external parts such as the monitor, keyboard and mouse.

5. Resell- Reselling your computer is one way to get rid of your computer where you can decide how much money you’d like to receive. It’s important to be reasonable with price considering technology becomes dated quickly. Ask around, many friends and family members may be waiting for an opportunity for a new cheap computer.

When trying to get rid of your old computer, it’s very important to consider all of the options you have. Weigh the hassle and the reward that you will deal with when approaching each method and it will be obvious which the right choice is for you.

Almost all our work is done through computers. There are many positives for owning a computer. It has become a necessity rather than luxury. With the increased applications that make anything and everything possible, it is not only helpful commercially but even personally. Having said that it is also very important to know, how to buy a computer?

Getting a computer is easy but getting our first and best choice is tricky. The salesmen are ever ready to give any number of useful or useless pack deals in order to increase their commission. When buying we have to take into consideration our needs and requirements, not theirs. We first have to decide what we going the use the computer for, as that is going to be the basis to build the computer of our dreams.

Sometimes buying different parts of the computer rather than buying the entire package which includes parts that we do not need or use is better in the long run. What are you looking for in a CPU, RAM memory, software, DVD/CD drive, speakers, recorders, microphones, web cameras, USB ports, etc? After determining that look to see if a pre-built computer will meet your needs and if you can’t find one get the parts you’ll need to build one.

HP, Dell, IBM, Apple, Compaq, ATI, Vaio, Sony etc. are some of the best computer companies on the market. We have to pick out the one that will suit the best of our needs. If we need to store graphics, movies or songs, then we have to make sure to go for the one that has more RAM memory, as compared to the one with the best processor in it. If we are using the computer for our personal use, having official software in it will not help us at all, as that is not our requirement. Playing games and storing them will again require extra memory.

A computer is an investment rather than expense. If we are looking forward to use a computer for a long-term then we also need to consider the cost of future up-grading. So let’s be smart buyers and update ourselves with the latest in technology.
