First off, you need to know the model and brand or company of your mobile phone. This is the basic step, and most of us usually know the brand and model of our mobile phones when we go out to buy them. This piece of information is important because some cell phone brands require specific software to transfer photos from the mobile phone to the computer.
Next step is to check whether your cell phone came with a data cable. The data cable is a wire that connects to your phone from one end, and a USB port on your computer from the other end. If this is the case, then connect the wire from both ends to their designated ports. Once you have done that, wait for your computer to detect your mobile phone as a drive. This should take only a few seconds to a minute. Whether or not your USB has been detected by your computer would be indicated by a pop up bubble on the bottom right hand corner of your computer screen.
If your mobile phone does not come with a data cable, then you must buy a mobile phone card reader. Almost all cell phones have the option of inserting an external card reader, into them, and the photos that you take from your cell phone automatically get stored into your memory card. This memory card is an all-purpose memory card and it would store almost all the date within your phone, including songs.
Once you have a card reader, you can take out this external memory card in your cell phone and insert it into the card reader. This card reader would be attached to your PC via a USB port. When you insert your memory card into the card reader, your computer will detect your memory card as a drive which could be opened and the contents within could be viewed. Either an option to open and view your card reader would pop up on the screen, or you might have to go to "My Computer" and find the new drive detected, which would be your memory card. Once you can view the contents of your memory card on your computer, copy paste the pictures from your memory card drive to your computer drive, in a folder where you want them to be saved.
