How to Find IP Address on Computer

Each and every device that is connected to internet is associated with a unique number which is referred to as the IP (Internet Protocol) address. An IP address is generally a set of four numerical figures separated by dots. For instance, 127.0.0.1 is an IP address. An IP address can be used as a means to identify the country or the region from where the computer is connected to the internet. The process of finding the IP address of a computer is very easy. Here are the steps needed to find the IP address on a computer.

Method One:

  1. Click on the Start icon situated on the left hand bottom corner of the window of your computer screen.
  2. Once the menu pops up, select the 'run' option and click on it. This action opens up a small pop up window containing an input box with a blinking cursor in it.
  3. Type 'command' or 'cmd' in the input box and press enter or click on the 'OK' button.

Method Two:

  1. Click on the Start icon.
  2. Then select 'all programs'
  3. Cick on the 'accessories' option
  4. Choose the option 'Command prompt'

By following either of the above mentioned methods, you will open a MS DOS window. Once this window is opened, you can easily find the IP address of your system. This is the medium through which you can send a command to your system and get a reply.

The easiest way of finding the IP address is to type 'ipconfig', without the quotes in the MS DOS window and press enter. The system responds to this command by displaying the information related to Windows IP configuration. The IP address of the system is also displayed along with the complete data related to the Windows IP configuration. For getting more detailed and elaborate information along with the IP address, use the command 'ipconfig/all', which even provides the information related to the network connections.

Websites IP:

If you are interested in knowing the IP addresses of the websites you are connected to, it is very easy. Once you follow either of the mentioned methods and open the MS DOS window, just type the command 'netstat -n', without the quotes. This command returns the list of all active connections on your system. The information is displayed in four columns and the columns that you need to focus on are the second and third columns namely, local address and foreign address. The local address represents the IP address of your system, whereas the foreign address represents the IP addresses of the websites or the computers you are connected to.
